Working as a PADI scuba diving instructor at Davy Jones Locker on Koh Tao in Thailand and teaching all of the PADI recreational dive courses is rewarding enough, but once in a while it is nice to have the opportunity to do something a little different. As well as teaching people to scuba dive DJL is a global leader in training professional divers through our Divemaster and Diving Instructor development programs.

The DJL IDC is rated as a 5* career development centre. This is the highest possible rating given by PADI to any dive school. All our Instructor Development Courses are run by Platinum Course Director Peter Nieuwhof, one of an elite group of the most qualified professionals in recreational diving. As a PADI Staff Instructor, I was recently lucky enough to help out staffing the last PADI instructor development course. Working alongside passionate divers, who are working towards realizing their dreams of becoming professional divers, is an incredibly rewarding experience.

During the IDC candidates learn how to use the PADI system of academic, confined and open water presentations. As a staff instructor I was able to help out with the assessment of the presentations. It is nerve wracking challenge to mark the candidates’ presentations, if you don’t correct a potential mistake at the IDC stage the candidate could go on to fail the instructor exam.

The IDC concludes with independent examination by examiners sent directly from PADI HQ in Sydney. This is one area where the PADI instructor development system is second to none. Only PADI independently verifies the competence of every instructor they certify.

Many of the candidates go on to enroll in our popular Master Scuba Diver Trainer internship program. During the program, the new instructors get to work alongside the experienced full time instructors of DJL, to develop real world teaching experience. They also learn how to conduct 5 PADI specialties, such as deep diver, enriched air nitrox, wreck diver and emergency oxygen provider.

Those truly committed to a career in the dive industry have the option to continue on to the PADI IDC Staff instructor course, where they learn to train the next generation of dive professionals.

So whether you are looking to get your foot onto the first rung of being a professional level diver, or an experienced instructor, ready to take the next step, come and check out the award winning career development team at Davy Jones Locker.
