Additional information about the different courses;

Coral Reef Ecology

Coral ecology is the basic knowledge to any marine conservation courses and activity. In this course you will learn to understand what coral reefs are, their importance, and how much danger they are in.
Classroom:

  • Presentation on coral reef ecology

Dive:

  • Identify living corals from dead corals or other marine organisms
  • Recognize and collect coral fragment

What you’ll learn in this course?

You will be able to:

  • Understand what coral reefs are, their importance, and how much danger they are in
  • Recognize corals and identify coral fragments in need of help
Biorock

Hin Fai Biorock is an artificial dive site, created in 2008 by the marine branch of Save Koh Tao. The Biorock uses electricity to accumulate minerals on a steal structure and alter the PH level of the water. This is called mineral accretion technology. It provides a better environment for corals, clams, oysters and sponges, and can increase their growth rate by up to 5 times. In this course, we’ll go into more detail of ocean acidification problems and how the Biorock technology works in altering the water chemistry using electrolyses.
Classroom:

  • Biorock video
  • Biorock technology
  • Research method on Biorock

Dive:

  • Coral fragment collection and attach to Biorock structure

Research on Biorock efficiency

What you’ll learn in this course?

You will be able to:

  • Understand how the Biorock technology works and learn survey techniques used for research.
  • Recognize coral fragments in need of help and attach them on the Biorock structure.
Artificial Reef, Coral and Fish Nurseries

In this course, you will learn what the difference is between artificial reefs and nurseries, when are they being used, what material is best to use, what beneficial effects they can have for the natural reef, and much more. Koh Tao has many great artificial dive sites; we’ll take you to two different artificial dive sites and get you involved in improving the sites.
Classroom:

  • Presentations on artificial reef, fish and coral nursery

Dive:

  • Dive on an artificial dive site
  • Dive on fish and coral nurseries

Maintenance and improvement on artificial structures

What you’ll learn in this course?

You will be able to:

  • Understand the benefits of artificial reefs and nurseries
  • Learn how to do maintenance and transplant corals
Coral Genus Identification, Disease and Predation

Indentifying coral genus is a very interesting activity. It makes you aware to the immense diversity of corals and their individual beauties. We’ll use the coral finder book and training videos to practice coral identification, and then we’ll take the book underwater and practice in a real natural environment. You will also learn about the coral disease and predation and be able to assess the general health of a reef.

Classroom:

  • Coral identification techniques
  • Training videos and practice
  • Presentation on coral diseases and predation

Dive:

  • Coral identification
  • Find out why a coral colony is dying

What you’ll learn in this course?

You will be able to:

  • Recognize and identify corals using the coral finder book and using resources from the Internet
  • Assess the general health of a coral reef in one glance

PADI / PROJECT AWARE COURSE

EMP Ecological monitoring program (3 days)

Day 1: Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP) is a coral reef research program overseen by Save Koh Tao and the individual dive shops. Through this program, Save Koh Tao collects information on the biodiversity and abundance of the fish, invertebrate, and coral species on Koh Tao.
Classroom: Presentation of the Ecological Monitoring Program Coral ecology Indicative species for Koh Tao: The invertebrate family Introduction to different survey methods like Coral Watch and Greenfins survey 1 Dive: Navigate and/or layout the transect line for the EMP Conduct a survey on invertebrates
Day 2: Classroom: Indicative species: The fish family Fish identification techniques 1 Dive: Navigate and/or layout the transect line for the EMP Conduct a fish survey
Day 3: Classroom: Substrate and coral identification Coral disease, predation and threats 1 Dive: Navigate and/or layout the transect line Conduct a substrate survey
Note: PADI will give 100% of the money of the certification for conservation and education on Koh Tao.

Mooring lines

In this course, you will learn how to fix or install a mooring line.

Classroom:

  • Presentations on mooring lines installation techniques and considerations
  • Learn the good knots and which one to avoid

Dive:

  • Maintenance or installation of mooring lines around Koh Tao

LAND CONSERVATION

Permaculture in Practice Land-Based Workshops (2 afternoons)

Protecting the marine environment begins with what we do on land, so in this course you will learn about two land-based conservation and sustainability topics, and get to apply what you learn through hands-on activities. You will get to choose two of the following nine topics:
