The Assistant Instructor course on Koh Tao is run over the first week of the Instructor Development Course and so if you aren't sure if you feel ready to take the full IDC right away you can start off by taking the Assistant Instructor course to see how you feel after completing that.

You must

  • Be a PADI Divemaster or qualifying certification from another certification organization
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have 60 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation dives
  • Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
  • Have CPR and First Aid Training within the last 24 months
  • Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement if you like you can contact us for a copy of the PADI medical form to check first before you come

* Plus you must also pay PADI directly for your Assistant Instructor rating once you have completed the course on Koh Tao, which is currently $100 Australian dollars (check current fee with PADI).  You can check the current exchange rates with sites like to see what that is in your local currency.

What materials do you need?

The EFR Instructor Manual and PADI IDC crewpak which includes all the materials needed to prepare for a PADI Assistant Instructor or Open Water Scuba Instructor course.

We can supply this for you at cost of 20,500 Baht.  You can make a deposit for the IDC Crewpak and then we can issue that to you right away so you can start working towards your Assistant Instructor qualification before you get here.

As a PADI Assistant Instructor, you'll start to learn the PADI System of diver education. You can act as an instructional scuba assistant and assume limited teaching responsibilities. It’s a great way to gain experience in order to become a scuba instructor

The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the first part of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) and when followed by the Open Water Scuba Instructor course (OWSI) and successfully passing the Instructor Examination (IE), results in certification as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

Whilst working as an Assistant Instructor you'll gain hands-on experience teaching students while still being under the wing of an experienced Instructor.

You may be able to earn college credit for the PADI Assistant Instructor course.


So what is covered in this course?

You build upon your abilities to organize and supervise scuba diving activities, while concentrating on developing teaching skills. You learn through:

Knowledge development through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations
Confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and presentations
Open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations

What can you teach after completing the course?

In addition to the responsibilities and duties you already have as a PADI Divemaster, as a PADI Assistant Instructor
you can:

  • Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • During confined water dives, present initial skills training under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • Teach and certify PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Divers under the direction of a PADI Instructor
  • Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses
  • Teach the AWARE Coral Reef Conservation specialty course
  • Conduct PADI Discover Scuba Diving experiences in a pool or confined water
  • Conduct PADI Seal Team AquaMissions
  • Teach PADI Digital Underwater Photographer specialty courses under the direction of a PADI Instructor after earning the PADI Digital
  • Underwater Photographer Specialty Instructor rating

What will you Use?

You use all the basic scuba equipment and some scuba accessories such as a dive slate, dive knife, compass, dive watch, etc.

We recommended that you own all of your own scuba equipment at this level, as familiarity with personal gear improves general scuba diving skills. If you don't already own all the equipment you require then you'll be welcome to buy any equipment through our dive shop as we receive discounted rates from suppliers for being good customers.

What if I decide I want to carry on and take the rest of the IDC course whilst I'm doing the Assistant Instructor course?

Yes that is no problem at all as the Assistant Instructor course is the first week of the IDC and as you need the IDC Crewpak for the Assistant Instructor course you will already have everything you need and so you can just carry on with the second week of the IDC.  You can see more details able the rest of the IDC here.


Payment for PADI Assistant Instructor

The deposit amount for the PADI Assistant Intructor is 20,500 baht which covers the cost of the IDC Crewpak and the EFRI manual, once you have paid the deposit for the Assistant Instructor course you will get access to your IDC Crewpak and you will collect the EFRI materials, slates and backpack when you arrive here for the IDC.  The cost of the Assistant Instructor course is 20,000 baht and you will pay that when you arrive here and then you will pay PADI directly for your Assistant Instructor membership fee by credit card when your application form is submitted to PADIafter you complete the course. 

If you decide to carry on and complete the whole of the IDC then you can decide to do that whilst you are here taking the Assistant Instructor course.
